General info:
Eliza A. Millard was born in the Town of Harmony, Chautauqua County, New York State. Eliza was the 2nd child of Israel Millard and Delila Wellman Millard, and spent her early years in the Ashville, Town of Busti, NY. Delila, Israel, and Israel's brother Seymour were living in the same household in Ashville, Town of Busti, according to the 1860 Census. Delila and Israel appear to have separated after 1861 (Israel reportedly went missing for a few years - probably the Civil War), and then Delila married Seymour Washington Millard. Delila, Seymour and children later moved to Titusville in 1865 where Seymour became involved in the oil industry.
We don't know how Eliza met David Fulton but it was probably due to their families both being in the oil business. We also don't have an exact date for their marriage but according to her obituary it was 1868 (Jan 1869 - Millard Family Bible). Eliza and David's first child, Luther David Fulton, was born in 1869. They may have also had an unnamed female child born abt 1871 who died young (Millard family records). They had two more sons, Joseph Newton Fulton born in 1873, and Robert Howard Fulton born in 1889. Looks like Robert was one of those "later life surprises" as he was 16 years younger that Joseph.
According to her obituary in the Titusville Herald, "Eliza was a loving woman. She was never happier than when she had her family gathered around her. She witnessed her sons grow up to sturdy manhood and saw her grandchildren. When she closed her eyes in the last sleep there was only peace in her soul." She was a member of the Free Methodist Church.
According to Dr. Barr's records (a Titusville physician who kept a birth & death log from 1855-1905), Eliza died 08 Jan 1914. The deed that officially passed the family home on Drake Street to David in 1917, said she died 08 Jan 1915, but we suspect that the deed document was in error. She was buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Titusville. There is no separate headstone with her name, just the large Fulton monument. She preceded David in death by 13 years.
